The São Francisco Xavier Church was initially built by the Jesuits. In July 1567, at the request of Mem de Sá, Father José de Anchieta transferred the Colégio de São Vicente to Rio de Janeiro and participated in the construction of this Church, which was a hermitage, where the words of Fr. Anchieta: “In this Church we teach to love God, to defend the family and to work for Brazil”. In 1795, it was elevated to the Perpétua parish, being the first of Tijuca and of the North Vicariate, until l865, when the São Joaquim Parish was created, in Estácio.

The Duke of Caxias, a faithful parishioner and responsible for the reconstruction of this Church, in 1869, refused to pay homage in military campaigns, saying: “When the House of God is in ruins, the soldier does not receive parties. Go rebuild the church in my parish of the old mill”.

In this Church there are three priceless relics: the Baptismal Font; Relic of Saint Francis Xavier and the image of N. S. das Dores brought from Europe and donated by Empress D. Thereza Cristina in 1880.
